Critique Group by Email

I'm generally not a fan of forums, because... honestly, I don't know why. I've had some bad experiences with some, and otherwise they just tend to overwhelm me. I prefer to work by email, but most Critique Groups seem to be forum-based. I suppose I can understand this, but I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in an email version.

This would be a group of people on a mailing list, such as on YahooGroups. Chapters or Manuscripts could be exchanged between single members, or sent to the whole group for a round table discussion. Other writing topics could be discussed, allowing a small venue for writers to meet and talk, delivered straight to your email.

Any thoughts? Anyone interested? You can post here, or email me. (Naturally.)

Thanks for your time,

Mia

Great Idea

Hi Mia

I can't get my head around the whole 'forum' thing.  I like keeping it simple - e-mailing back and forth as and when you have the time.

This is a good suggestion to round up some other folks from the website.  I know that we have been exchanging anyway - but if anybody else is reading this and wants to take part in this idea.  I'm in!

I'll be in touch :) -

I'm a maybe :^)

I agree that some groups don't meet expectations and the feedback is not useful.

I belong to one really good in-person group.  I enjoy table reads and all members of the group making comments.  There they're both in writing on the copies the author passes out and receives back and verbal comments to the author's face.

What I like about a group/forum comments -

  • others might agree so the author can weigh how important that suggested change is
  • others might disagree and that indicates that a sole reviewer could give poor advice (maybe it's not their genre)
  • others can improve by seeing/hearing other comments
  • one-on-one is only as strong as the weakest person (either defensive over comments on weak prose, or weak reviewer gives no comments that help)

Fair Points...

...but I wasn't debating the virtues of one-on-one versus groups. :-) It was more... who isn't as crazy about forums and would like to join a critique group by email? I know that I for one am not so fortunate as to be in an area or situation to have a good in-person group, and I tend to not like forums/message boards. I was wondering if anyone else felt the same and might like a critique group over a mailing list, or something similar.

I'm in...

I would be more than happy to participate. I am currently finishing a horror/thriller anthology that I would love to get some feedback on. I also belong to a 'live' group, but time there is limited and it takes a while to get through the entire manuscript. Unless there is a pressing reason to do otherwise, I think all comments and critiques should be sent to the entire group so we can all weigh in.

I am willing to critique anything from spelling, punctuation and grammar to characters and story lines. I will also read any genre. Great idea, Mia.

I can be reached at storiesbyedwardowen (at) gmail (dot) com.

Like this idea!

Hi Mia,

I'd be interested in joining in if there's room. I write romance, but read all genres. I've got some big commitments through the end of July, but after that I'd be more available to participate.

You can contact me @ pparisusa@msn.com if  you get the group going.

Thanks for putting this idea out there.

Critique - either email or forum - is always awesome!

I'm always up for improving my writing - whether I do it in-person, by forum, or by email. If this is still open, I'd love to join. I'm all over the place but easiest would be bcbrownbooks AT gmail DOT com. Thanks for offering this!

(P.S. I write paranormal mysteries/urban fantasy, fantasy, and science fiction and romance. I read and critique pretty much everything - except vamps and shifters.)
