I am a writer who rediscovered her inner artist recently. I am feeling like the missing part that would complete my creative side has finally shown up again. I was always creative. In fact, I like to say that I came out of the birth canal with a crayon and drawing pad in my hand. No wonder my mother’s labor was so intense.
Life ended up getting in the way and my artistic vision was put on the shelf. About a year ago, I gave myself permission to delve into that part of me that was overwhelmed by work, relationships, and that extra 10 pounds.
Something amazing happened. It started to come back. My art was finding its way onto the paper and now I am at the point in my life where writing and drawing were becoming demanding lovers. Who do I choose?
I choose both. I know – how selfish. I wonder if this would work with Colin Firth and Javier Bardem. But, I digress. As usual.
I teach a creativity coaching workshop where I ask people to write and draw with their non-dominant hand. They are mostly timid and I feel sad that they won’t let themselves go and just have fun.
I decided to try drawing with my non-dominant hand again and was amazed with the outcome. It feels like someone else has control over my brain.
What happened was I gave into my creativity and intuition that my right brain holds and I let go of the logical and analytic left brain.
I am a very visual person so I think the best way to explain this further is to show what I mean.
The first 2 drawings are done with my right hand – my dominant hand.
These two were created by using my non-dominant hand - my left hand.
See what I am saying? There is a whole other side to us that we do not tap into enough. Please give it a try. There are no further rules then to explore the other half of your brain. And be amazed.
