I'm looking for a beta reader for my book of five short stories I'll be releasing this month. The word count of each story is under 2,000 words. Please email me before February 10th: litl_ninja@yahoo.com

Happy Birthday (teaser)

The final strains of happy birthday fade into applause.

“Cassie, make a wish!”

That’s my cue to go. I got what I came for anyway.

“That m-makes t-t-twenty-three so far this month,” Sybil accused while starting the car as I climb in.

Story Shopping (teaser)

My number one goal today is to find a story. Stories aren’t hard to find when there are groups of people milling around. I call my dad and finally accept his offer to attend the annual auto show.

“Thanks for picking me up, dad.”

“No problem, Abby. What made you change your mind about coming today?”

Sweetest Release (teaser)

 “Ah-choo!”

Bless me. Good my sneeze didn’t wake Phil up. I don’t really like it when Phil is awake on the weekends. It’s not because he’s mean to me or anything. Phil actually takes very good care of me. We go to the dog park; he gives me treats and waits patiently as I mark my territory all the way home to our apartment. However, as soon as we walk in the door, Phil goes straight to the refrigerator and starts drinking beer. He’s so clumsy that after a few sips, he inevitably gets cut or scraped and Phil can’t let anything heal. He likes nothing better than to sit on the couch, watch TV and pick off his scabs one at a time. I may be a dog, but it makes me nauseous.

Tarantula (teaser)

I hear the airy whistling overhead. My teeth sought my fingertips. Mommy hates it when I chew my nails.

“Will you please land?”

The paper airplane dips its paper wing in response and begins a slow circling descent as if to say why don’t you come up here?

Tic-tac-toe (teaser)

“He out-bopped the buzzard and the oriole…”

“Hey I was listening to that.”

“I need to concentrate, Jenny.”

Lightning flashes followed by its companion thunder. The lights flicker, warning an imminent power outage. I look back at Billy’s winning scribble on my paper. I have to win tomorrow.
